Declare state of emergency in teacher education-Oyo Commissioner

A passionate call has been made to the present administration in the Federal Republic of Nigeria to urgently declare a state of emergency in teacher education.

This call was made by the Oyo state Commissioner for Investment, Trade, cooperative and Industry, Prof. Solihu Aelabu at the 2026 World Teachers’ Day Celebration with theme’ ’STANDING WITH TEACHERS:60 YEARS OF PROTECTING THE PROFESSION, ADVANCING ITSD STATUS AND SHAPING OUR FUTURE’’ organized by the state wing of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) in Ibadan, Nigeria.

‘’Let the Federal Government declare a state of emergency in teachers’ education. The working conditions of teachers has deteriorated, and now they make use of impoverished teaching aids. In addition, the schools lack basic amenities. Teacher shortages has worsened. The morale of teachers is very low. I want to call on state government to recruit more teachers, like Oyo state. In the past 7 years, the administration of Engr. Seyi Makinde has recruited about 30, 000 teachers.

Prof. Adelabu emphasized the opportunities that education unlocks, while lamenting that ‘’ 60 years is also a time for honest assessment of the ILO/UNSECO recommendations for the betterment of teachers. We teachers, where are we today? Are we reshaping our future? We need to reconstruct. 60 years after, what is the position of the teaching profession? In many parts of the world teachers are poorly paid, socially undervalued and undertrained. The teaching profession is treated as a last resort rather than a first choice. Teachers are professionals who deserve respect and fair compensation. Coming back to Nigeria, is the teaching a profession? There are people who are not trained but are in the classrooms.

He noted that research had pointed out that Nigeria requires 1.3 million teachers in primary schools, saying, ‘’592,700 teachers serve approximately almost 32 million students. You can see where we are. This is Nigeria education for you. The benchmark for a teacher to a pupil is supposed to be 1-25, but what we have is a teacher to about 70 pupils.’’

Prof. Adelabu urged teachers to keep hope alive, adding, ‘’ the promise is not kept, but we must not give up hope. Continue to believe in the future. If we truly want development, we must all rise and stand with teachers.

In his address, the state NUT chairman, Hassan Fatai commended the state governor for his achievements in the education sector, saying, ‘’The NUT, Oyo state Wing is particularly grateful and sincerely appreciative of the Oyo state Government led by Engr. Oluwaseyi Abiodun Makinde, FNSE, DSC, GSSRS for his outstanding performance in the governance of Oyo state, especially in advancing our education system and ‘standing tall’’ wityh teachers of Oyo state since his assumption of duty in 2019 as the Executive Governor of the Pace-Setter state. Teachers have not been having it good before now. Oyo state teachers say ‘’ THANK YOU SIR’’.

However, the orientation, attitude choice of words, dress patterns among others of pupils and students in both the public and private schools in the state calls for concerted efforts to reverse the disturbing trend.

In his remarks, the chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Dr. Nureni Adeniran pointed out that indemnifying with teachers is to recognize their selfless service to humanity, adding,’’ we should go beyond ceremonial appreciation, by providing teaching and learning resources for teachers. The need opportunities for professional growth and monitoring.''

These Perilous Times

Evil doers gain access to the children of God when there is spiritual emptiness, demographic disorder, elite self-hatred, technological control and manipulation, economic dependency and the weaponization of hunger and poverty, the fear of speaking the truth among several other factors.

The evil-minded take advantage of well publicized ideology to brainwash the ignorant and illiterate, make use of intimidation and institutional compromise and the deliberate undermining of inheritance to make a self-centered head way.

In these perilous times, those who are either witnesses, victims or students of history, readily outline close monitoring of the activities of targets, strange phone calls, the co-opting of relatives, family members and domestic staff into evil plots, ambush on travels and the resort to the female genders to achieve devilish and sinister ends.

Indeed, the watch word is perpetual vigilance.

Food Insecurity-The Reality

Successive administrations in Nigeria, the present inclusive, believe that the country has great potentials in agriculture, but the slow pace of agricultural growth, the inability to  generate adequate employment in the sector, in addition to the insignificant socio-economic growth, the high poverty level and the feverish state  of democracy have all contributed to the worrisome state of governance today.

The obvious food insecurity confronting a large chunk of the population living below the poverty line and the embarrassing absence of  participatory democracy among others are militating factors to the ever elusive agricultural growth as promised by the federal and State Governments.

With majority of  the very poor residing in the rural areas, the over 21 years of democracy has confirmed that   it would be nearly impossible, perhaps, to pin point the specific dividends of democracy, when a majority of the population are unemployed and live below the poverty line, when inadequate availability of agro-industrial raw materials impede  industrial growth and when agriculture cannot, for obvious reasons, perform its known functions in the economic development process.

Agriculture, without doubt, has great potentials for achieving a broad-based economy, but its performance remains unimpressive.

If government at all levels have sincere plans to alleviate the present sufferings of the people, then the revival of the Strategic Grains Reserve and reintroduction of Guaranteed Minimum Price System is crucial.

Sadly, the mindset of the young Nigerians and their aspirations  have defied all known logic, as same are suggestive of fetish and diabolic initiatives for wealth creation.

These young people resort to homosexuality, sodomy, prostitution among others to make needs meet with the tacit consent  of their elders.

These initiatives would never promote agricultural development.

Finally, Nigerians find it extremely difficult to  identify specific targets and action plans set by the Federal and State Governments for accomplishment, this is just as farmers across the country are full of lamentations  over the poor state of affairs i the troubled sector.

The Dwindling Fortunes of Agriculture

Agriculture has the potentials of been a major revenue earner in Nigeria, if only farmers had not been neglected for several years and deprived of needed incentives.
Indeed, farmers in rural areas have never been encouraged to remain within their localities to propel increased farm production, while production at the local government level has made the availability of schools,Primary health Care Delivery, functional electricity and potable water a mirage.

The caretaker committees at the grassroots have only succeeded in impoverishing the rural populace.
At present, agricultural equipment and machinery are sourced from advanced countries, this alone, is an impediment to self sufficiency in food production.

Indeed, sub-standard farm equipment and machinery to a large extent affected output in most farms in the country, just as access to finance is a major challenge for farmers.

Bank interest rates are not friendly, if at all the banks are ready to give out loans to farmers. Although the Federal Government assures that it would fully support the agricultural sector, inadequate funding of the sector, closely trailed by diversion of funds meant for agricultural production is still common place.
The erratic power supply, prohibitive cost of petroleum products and the activities of insurgents, bandits and kidnappers have all contributed to make the agricultural sector less attractive.
Truly, government monopoly in critical sectors is an advantage, but bad management as a result of corruption is the discussion on every mouth in the land.
At Nigeria’s level of development government ought to invest alongside private individuals. But waiting for the agricultural  sector to blaze the trail, is a sign of lack of vision.

It is only when the country has reached full employment level, that government can think of divesting.
Has Nigeria reached the level of full employment ?

This might not be so, as the National Bureau of Statistics is very reluctant to make public the rate of unemployment in the country, even though the answer could be seen on the faces of millions of jobless Nigerians.
Without doubt, the agricultural sector can provide millions of jobs, once the leadership appreciates what is required to transform the economy.
But good management revolving round a porous judicial system and law enforcement agencies  are  never the panacea for sustainable development and growth.

Don’t sell King College through the backdoor-Federal Workers Forum

The Federal Workers Forum (FWF) has kicked against the sale of unity schools in Nigeria.

According to the National Coordinator of FWF, Comrade Andrew Emelieze there were serious attempts to sell the unity schools in the past.

‘’The position of the Federal Workers Forum is that education must be prioritized not privatized.

Kings College should not be sold through the backdoor through concession.

Similar attempts have been made in the past to sell unity schools but it has failed, this recent attempt will also fail.

The forum calls for massive resistance and solidarity with Kings College.

Therefore, we call for the continuation of the strike action by Federal workers in the unity schools pending when the government retrace its steps.

The sale of unity schools is mission impossible.

‘’We call on ASUU, SANUU, NASU and other education-based unions including research institutes to join the resistance because if they succeed with unity schools they will go after public schools at all levels.’’

It should be noted that secondary schools owned by the military are not concessioned why then is their interest in the sale of unity schools meant for civilians. This is just an attempt by the old students to buy their teachers and their former schools. Their focus is land grabbing. This is unacceptable.’ Comrade Emelieze concluded.

Federal Workers have suffered enough-Comrade Emelieze

A sizable number of workers’ unions and their members have commenced their overt solicitations for political office holders who have failed to meet the expectations of the people ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Indeed, these workers have overtime benefited financially from the political office holders at the expense of the overall good.

Sadly, they abandoned one of their own in his times of persecution; in order not to offend their paymasters.

The endorsement of political office holders who have performed below standards by labor unions is an aberration and oddity.

Sadly, these so-called labor movements have been muted all this while considering the poor governance in several of the states.

Interestingly, their behavior is similar to those of the cultists led by one Lekan Adewale and Akerele, who have for long been harassing, terrorizing and attacking residents from their den at the Amoke Mall in Olorunsogo, Molete, Ibadan, Oyo state.

They disguise as estate agents even though most of them were not successful to complete the essential secondary school education.

The government consents to such behavior, if the utterances of known political office holders is anything to go by.

Pecuniary interests form their creed.

However, the National Coordinator of the Federal Workers Forum (FWF), Comrade Andrew undeterred by the treacherous attitude of the labor movements is unrelenting in exposing the pitiable condition of workers in Nigeria.

According to Comrade Emelieze in  a Press Release dated 2 September, 2026,, ‘’ Federal workers have suffered enough. It has been three years of torture and agony for the federal workers since the removal of fuel subsidy. We are earnestly pleading with our representatives in the parliament to take our plea seriously, it is a distress call and an emergency situation right now with the federal workers nationwide. This is a call to equate the present existential economic realities and present a fair and just wage for the laboring workers.''

''Federal workers are now heavily indebted to micro finances and in most times, federal workers result to phone loan apps to be able to get transportation to work.

Our situation is very precarious, it is that bad that some federal workers now use firewood to cook not being able to afford the price of cooking gas.

We are seriously calling on the attention of the National Assembly for actions.

We had in the past severally called on Mr. President to rescue us but it is as if it is falling on deaf ears. Even our calls for the payment of outstanding arrears have not been met.

Except the recent payment of the wage award balance owned since July 2024 which of course is a product of struggle from the Federal Workers Forum and the interventions of the Joint Public Service Negotiation Council.

We are however grateful to the new Finance Minister for living up to his promise to balance the wage award before August 15.

We urge the new Minister to pay up those yet to receive the wage award balance and fulfill the remaining promise to pay up 40% peculiar allowance, promotion arrears and others owed us.

As earlier stated, with the present cost of living crisis, it is very dangerous for federal workers to wait until July 2027 for a wage review.

As a matter of fact, it is suicidal for the federal workers to continue in this ugly situation.

Hence, based on the current cost of living, crisis it can only be a matter of justice that the federal wages be immediately reviewed to meet up with the current economic realities in Nigeria.

We call for your urgent and immediate intervention in this regard.'' Comrade Emelieze concluded.

Those who dictate the tune

In the present dispensation, the perpetual silence of certain political office holders is far from golden, but a grand conspiracy to enable wrongdoing to thrive.

Indeed, the structural imbalance, inequities and constitutional infirmity in the polity have so far, yet to be convincingly addressed.

In these perilous times, only personalities with courage and vision can salvage Nigeria, not those who rely on human sacrifice to cling onto transient power.

The lukewarm attitude and inertia of the so-called leaders in this period, gives flesh to the saying that the burial of a slave does not elicit joy and merriment from a living slave.

Nigerians continue to wonder why those elected to defend and protect their interests have been unable to do so.

The people wake up daily to be confronted by pervasive insecurity, hunger, abject poverty, joblessness and a very high level of illiteracy.

A famous Greek philosopher, Anarchasis stated long ago that ‘’ laws are like cobwebs, strong enough to detain the weak and too weak to hold the strong’’’.

This suitably describes the present situation in the Federal Republic.

Indeed, political dissatisfaction and social discontent have become visible threats to Nigeria’s democracy.

Sadly, the economic reforms of those-in-charge on the pivot of subsidy removal and the increases in the prices of petroleum products have aggravated the subdued anger of Nigerians.

Millions are jobless and cannot afford three square meals a day neither can they pay for the tuition fees of their children and wards in schools and tertiary institutions.

However, it is disturbing that virtually all the institutions that should constitutionally sustain democracy are working assiduously to scuttle it, since the odds are against those that dictate the tune for the piper.

Hardships: Cow skin(ponmo) Replaces protein in Nigeria

Meat, fish and eggs all edibles rich in protein have gone beyond the reach of millions of Nigerians.

The only alternative for people, presently, is to go for cow skin(ponmo).

Indeed, the sight of undernourished and unhappy looking Nigerians hawking richly baked sausage rolls and meat pies in transparent plastic containers, on behalf of confectioneries, is a very good expose of the mindset of the leaders at all levels of government.

Impoverishment is now common place.

Sadly, the rude and disrespectful behavior of young Nigerians is a replica of the behavior of certain present leaders in the Federal Republic.

Without doubt, the failure of the leaders to ensure that Nigerians have easy access to affordable sources of protein is an open disservice to the people.

However, the chairman of the Ifelodun 1 Butchers Association, Bodija market, Ibadan, Oyo state, Nigeria, Mr. Kayode Abija laments that cattle rustlers have almost chased butchers out of business.

‘’People no longer buy meat.

It is very expensive.

The meat we used to cut and sell for N50.00 per piece is now N200.00 per piece.

The meat we used to cut and sell for N100.00 per piece is now N500.000

People no longer buy meat as they used to do before.

And the government are yet to provide incentives for butchers.

Our representatives have done nothing to change the present situation.

At Saki, where we buy cows, cattle rustlers have almost run us out of business.

The cattle market is on the verge of collapse.

The government should come to our rescue. ‘’ Mr. Abija appealed.

Indeed, market leaders are not only complicit in the exploitation and cheating that are widespread in the markets, but they are also benefiting immensely from these acts.

These is the major reason why these leaders are very elusive and dodgy.

Of worry is the lust for money by some of those with political aspirations, who masquerade as candidates for certain political parties to negotiate their way to economic emancipation and prosperity.

Interestingly, the unrestricted influx of illegal aliens into the state calls for concern, considering the activities of some of them at the Scout Camp Neighborhood Market.

In addition, quite disturbing is also the criminal activities of motorcyclists in different parts of the state, such as Idi-Odo in the Challenge area and Olorunsogo, Molete both in the state capital the insinuation is that their acts have the approval of those-in-charge.

The general consensus among the citizenry is that the leaders at all levels of government have failed to meet their expectations.
