The Good Old Days

Chief Obafemi Awolowo was a political leader of Yoruba extraction who lived by example.

His leadership impacted positively on the Yoruba people in all spheres of life. However, it is doubtful if those who hold sway in this dispensation followed in his footsteps.

Chief Awolowo had a formidable political structure that outlived him. In his time, political meetings were held at his Ikenne home in Ogun State.

After the passing on to glory of Chief Awolowo, in the days of military rule, Chief Adekunle Ajasin took over the mantle of leadership, and meetings were held at his Owo home, Ondo State.

During this period, the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) came into being.

After Chief Ajasin did his beat, Pa Abraham Adesanya  took over the structure up till the end of the military era.

In the course of Pa Adesanya's leadership, those who could best be described as pseudo-Awoists and pseudo-democrats were accepted into the fold; sadly, the true and real progressives were barred due to the fact that they took up appointments in the military regime of the late despot, Gen. Sani Abacha.

Now known as Afenifere, the group restricted its membership while maintaining a closely knit relationship with the Alliance for Democracy (AD).

At a glance, Afenifere was composed of the first generation of Awoists, the second 11, and the unknown elements.

The unknown elements eventually hijacked the structure through unconventional means.

A prominent first-generation Awoist was a one-time governor of Lagos State, Alhaji Lateef Jakande.

However, Chiefs Bisi Akande and Segun Osoba belong to the second 11, while others were not yet into reckoning during the functional period of the group.

At a point in time, Chief Ebenezer Babatope, the director of organization of  the Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN), then stated that in 1982, during the last convention of the UPN, Chief Awolowo expressed the hope that a time will come when the good elements in the conservatives ill join the good elements in the progressives to form a synthesis.

But present happenings in the political sphere have defied this theory; rather, polarization and division are tools that have brought about the present scheme of things.

Of note is the fact that the progressives of the time past embarked on laudable programs such as free education to empower the Yoruba people.

Sadly, capitalist-inclined policies and nocturnal ideals and preferences are the working tools of today's leaders in the southwest geopolitical zone of Nigeria, to the chagrin of the disillusioned and impoverished people.

The new definition of the progressives includes, but is not limited to, the payment of school fees in primary and secondary schools, the introduction of multiple tax regimes, and the preference for mediocrity and people with doubtful educational qualifications to carry out government duties. So sad.

Today, the mindset and body language of the political leadership is best represented by  their  followers on the streets, offices, worship centers and other public places across the country.

Government at all levels are to blame

The Taliban got into public consciousness when the group was engaged by the Pakistani government to render protection services for a convoy which intended to open up trade route between Pakistan and Central Asia.

The group comprised of mostly Afghans and were trained in religious schools in Pakistan side by side the   Islamic fighters of Al-Qeda.

Mullah Mohammad Omar brought the Taliban into existence.

Omar, a one-eyed puritanical cleric, recruited students from koranic schools.

In its formative years, it was referred to as a student movement.

Today, young Nigerians are recruited into different forms of criminality by those who are supposed to be the basis of moral and behavioral uprightness.

These young people are now the reference point in various societal ills in different parts of the country.

It is quitter disturbing ignorance has overwhelmed the mindset of so many, even in government circles.

All aspects of social life have been corrupted to the extent that the young are now taught and groomed in lawlessness, indiscipline, criminality, immorality, obscenity and profanity.

They no longer exhibit initiative and discernment.

However, the elders are unperturbed.

Sadly, parents and guardians of these young people have continued to exhibit behavior that indicates that they were not properly brought according to acceptable moral standards.

Their orientation and views on issues of common interest are at variance with norms in society.

The government at all levels are to blame.

In 1975, Argentina, under Videla, the terror was well coordinated by government officials in the Ministry Interior, where a comprehensive list of missing people was reportedly kept.

Each military branch had its own intelligence service masterminding kidnappings, torture and executions.

At the top of the ladder was the atrocities of the police, with covert support from those-in-charge.

In addition, a number of Ministries, Departments and Agencies had lists of targets and security agencies operating for them.

The separate arms of state were not only vying for the dubious glory of apprehending more subversives, caging helpless citizens, torturing more people, but also created a system of total lawlessness and criminality.

The kidnappings were done by state sponsored individuals, while the police station and government office, whom were deeply involved, feigned ignorance.

Declare state of emergency in teacher education-Oyo Commissioner

A passionate call has been made to the present administration in the Federal Republic of Nigeria to urgently declare a state of emergency in teacher education.

This call was made by the Oyo state Commissioner for Investment, Trade, cooperative and Industry, Prof. Solihu Aelabu at the 2026 World Teachers’ Day Celebration with theme’ ’STANDING WITH TEACHERS:60 YEARS OF PROTECTING THE PROFESSION, ADVANCING ITSD STATUS AND SHAPING OUR FUTURE’’ organized by the state wing of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) in Ibadan, Nigeria.

‘’Let the Federal Government declare a state of emergency in teachers’ education. The working conditions of teachers has deteriorated, and now they make use of impoverished teaching aids. In addition, the schools lack basic amenities. Teacher shortages has worsened. The morale of teachers is very low. I want to call on state government to recruit more teachers, like Oyo state. In the past 7 years, the administration of Engr. Seyi Makinde has recruited about 30, 000 teachers.

Prof. Adelabu emphasized the opportunities that education unlocks, while lamenting that ‘’ 60 years is also a time for honest assessment of the ILO/UNSECO recommendations for the betterment of teachers. We teachers, where are we today? Are we reshaping our future? We need to reconstruct. 60 years after, what is the position of the teaching profession? In many parts of the world teachers are poorly paid, socially undervalued and undertrained. The teaching profession is treated as a last resort rather than a first choice. Teachers are professionals who deserve respect and fair compensation. Coming back to Nigeria, is the teaching a profession? There are people who are not trained but are in the classrooms.

He noted that research had pointed out that Nigeria requires 1.3 million teachers in primary schools, saying, ‘’592,700 teachers serve approximately almost 32 million students. You can see where we are. This is Nigeria education for you. The benchmark for a teacher to a pupil is supposed to be 1-25, but what we have is a teacher to about 70 pupils.’’

Prof. Adelabu urged teachers to keep hope alive, adding, ‘’ the promise is not kept, but we must not give up hope. Continue to believe in the future. If we truly want development, we must all rise and stand with teachers.

In his address, the state NUT chairman, Hassan Fatai commended the state governor for his achievements in the education sector, saying, ‘’The NUT, Oyo state Wing is particularly grateful and sincerely appreciative of the Oyo state Government led by Engr. Oluwaseyi Abiodun Makinde, FNSE, DSC, GSSRS for his outstanding performance in the governance of Oyo state, especially in advancing our education system and ‘standing tall’’ wityh teachers of Oyo state since his assumption of duty in 2019 as the Executive Governor of the Pace-Setter state. Teachers have not been having it good before now. Oyo state teachers say ‘’ THANK YOU SIR’’.

However, the orientation, attitude choice of words, dress patterns among others of pupils and students in both the public and private schools in the state calls for concerted efforts to reverse the disturbing trend.

In his remarks, the chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Dr. Nureni Adeniran pointed out that indemnifying with teachers is to recognize their selfless service to humanity, adding,’’ we should go beyond ceremonial appreciation, by providing teaching and learning resources for teachers. The need opportunities for professional growth and monitoring.''

These Perilous Times

Evil doers gain access to the children of God when there is spiritual emptiness, demographic disorder, elite self-hatred, technological control and manipulation, economic dependency and the weaponization of hunger and poverty, the fear of speaking the truth among several other factors.

The evil-minded take advantage of well publicized ideology to brainwash the ignorant and illiterate, make use of intimidation and institutional compromise and the deliberate undermining of inheritance to make a self-centered head way.

In these perilous times, those who are either witnesses, victims or students of history, readily outline close monitoring of the activities of targets, strange phone calls, the co-opting of relatives, family members and domestic staff into evil plots, ambush on travels and the resort to the female genders to achieve devilish and sinister ends.

Indeed, the watch word is perpetual vigilance.
