Those who dictate the tune

 In the present dispensation, the perpetual silence of certain political office holders is far from golden, but a grand conspiracy to enable wrongdoing to thrive.

Indeed, the structural imbalance, inequities and constitutional infirmity in the polity have so far, yet to be convincingly addressed.

In these perilous times, only personalities with courage and vision can salvage Nigeria, not those who rely on human sacrifice to cling onto transient power.

The lukewarm attitude and inertia of the so-called leaders in this period, gives flesh to the saying that the burial of a slave does not elicit joy and merriment from a living slave.

Nigerians continue to wonder why those elected to defend and protect their interests have been unable to do so.

The people wake up daily to be confronted by pervasive insecurity, hunger, abject poverty, joblessness and a very high level of illiteracy.

A famous Greek philosopher, Anarchasis stated long ago that ‘’ laws are like cobwebs, strong enough to detain the weak and too weak to hold the strong’’’.

This suitably describes the present situation in the Federal Republic.

Indeed, political dissatisfaction and social discontent have become visible threats to Nigeria’s democracy.

Sadly, the economic reforms of those-in-charge on the pivot of subsidy removal and the increases in the prices of petroleum products have aggravated the subdued anger of Nigerians.

Millions are jobless and cannot afford three square meals a day neither can they pay for the tuition fees of their children and wards in schools and tertiary institutions.

However, it is disturbing that virtually all the institutions that should constitutionally sustain democracy are working assiduously to scuttle it, since the odds are against those that dictate the tune for the piper.

The Noticeable Damage

 It is a known fact that knowledge and ignorance are pole apart.

Ignorance revolves around gullibility and susceptibility to half-truths.

This is the major reason why rationale minds seek knowledge to arrive at sound judgment.

It is very sad that those-in-charge are yet to translate the hopes of millions of Nigerians into reality, rather the reckless plunder of the national treasury has continued unhindered.

Indeed, the promises made by today’s political office holders are not hinged on abiding faith in responsible behavior and goal-oriented pursuits.

 

Everywhere, the people are cursing these political office holders, who have overtime, covertly annexed their landed properties; in connivance with willing public servants, fraudulent legal practitioners and ignorant and illiterate residents in several communities.

Non-indigenes are prominent in this regard.

This remains unreported.

The noticeable damage, the political office holders have done in the states of the federation are visible in public places, while phone theft, extortion and exploitation are common place in the markets.

Violence as a feature of democracy

The indices, are indeed frightening, the country has been on a downward slope in almost every sphere of national life.

 Unreliable health facilities, the prohibitive prices of foodstuff and beyond-the-reach cost of transportation have become nightmares for Nigerians.

Of worry, is the endemic and systemic corruption in the polity.

In Niccolo Machiavelli’s view, ‘’ the impression that one gets of a ruler and his brain is from seeing the men he has about him.’’

Of course, Nigerians are very concerned about the level of insecurity and constant threat to lives and property.

Sadly, the nation seems to have lost count of the various communal strife and state-sponsored genocide that have taken place over the past three years.

Really, no amount of propaganda, either by the establishment or its praise singers can conceal unmitigated disaster to the socio-economic process and the miserable state of affairs.

Take note, the investment in violence in reaping bounteous dividend.

Violence has become the most identifiable feature defining this present administration.

Interestingly, while the positive fruits of democracy are scanty, the negative and rotten fruits are in abundance.

Indeed, without adequate security the judiciary can never be confident.

However, for the judiciary to be efficient and effective, it should be made to be confident not corrupt.

The country’s predatory political system of mediocrity, arrogance and wickedness continues itself and create its own brigade of enemies.
