Hardships: Cow skin(ponmo) Replaces protein in Nigeria

 Meat, fish and eggs all edibles rich in protein have gone beyond the reach of millions of Nigerians.

The only alternative for people, presently, is to go for cow skin(ponmo).

Indeed, the sight of undernourished and unhappy looking Nigerians hawking richly baked sausage rolls and meat pies in transparent plastic containers, on behalf of confectioneries, is a very good expose of the mindset of the leaders at all levels of government.

Impoverishment is now common place.

Sadly, the rude and disrespectful behavior of young Nigerians is a replica of the behavior of certain present leaders in the Federal Republic.

Without doubt, the failure of the leaders to ensure that Nigerians have easy access to affordable sources of protein is an open disservice to the people.

However, the chairman of the Ifelodun 1 Butchers Association, Bodija market, Ibadan, Oyo state, Nigeria, Mr. Kayode Abija laments that cattle rustlers have almost chased butchers out of business.

‘’People no longer buy meat.

It is very expensive.

The meat we used to cut and sell for N50.00 per piece is now N200.00 per piece.

The meat we used to cut and sell for N100.00 per piece is now N500.000

People no longer buy meat as they used to do before.

And the government are yet to provide incentives for butchers.

Our representatives have done nothing to change the present situation.

At Saki, where we buy cows, cattle rustlers have almost run us out of business.

The cattle market is on the verge of collapse.

The government should come to our rescue. ‘’ Mr. Abija appealed.

Indeed, market leaders are not only complicit in the exploitation and cheating that are widespread in the markets, but they are also benefiting immensely from these acts.

These is the major reason why these leaders are very elusive and dodgy.

Of worry is the lust for money by some of those with political aspirations, who masquerade as candidates for certain political parties to negotiate their way to economic emancipation and prosperity.

Interestingly, the unrestricted influx of illegal aliens into the state calls for concern, considering the activities of some of them at the Scout Camp Neighborhood Market.

In addition, quite disturbing is also the criminal activities of motorcyclists in different parts of the state, such as Idi-Odo in the Challenge area and Olorunsogo, Molete both in the state capital the insinuation is that their acts have the approval of those-in-charge.

The general consensus among the citizenry is that the leaders at all levels of government have failed to meet their expectations.

 It is a known fact that knowledge and ignorance are pole apart.

Ignorance revolves around gullibility and susceptibility to half-truths.

This is the major reason why rationale minds seek knowledge to arrive at sound judgment.

It is very sad that those-in-charge are yet to translate the hopes of millions of Nigerians into reality, rather the reckless plunder of the national treasury has continued unhindered.

Indeed, the promises made by today’s political office holders are not hinged on abiding faith in responsible behavior and goal-oriented pursuits.

 

Everywhere, the people are cursing these political office holders, who have overtime, covertly annexed their landed properties; in connivance with willing public servants, fraudulent legal practitioners and ignorant and illiterate residents in several communities.

Non-indigenes are prominent in this regard.

This remains unreported.

The noticeable damage, the political office holders have done in the states of the federation are visible in public places, while phone theft, extortion and exploitation are common place in the markets.

The Morality Question

 Non-violent critics of underperforming leaders are only rendering patriotic service; as their actions will spur the citizenry to transparently decide the political future of the country.

Non-violent criticism ought to be viewed as a compliment because it outlines how leaders can move away from below the set standards and mediocrity.

In short run, the shortcomings of the leaders are showcased, but in the long run it enables them to perform better.

In the light of the above, true federalism must not be characterized by the absence of the rule of law and by inequalities or the predominance of anyone of the component units.

The predominance of the center is contrary to the principles of federalism.

Indeed, the country’s system is a travesty.

It is distorted.

No country can ever move forward based on superficially attractive programs that are obviously window dressed palliatives designed as soothing balm to pacify impoverished and distraught Nigerians.

Of great worry, is the fact that under this dispensation, the supremacy of the constitution is not respected by the present crop of political office holders.

The conduct of free, fair and credible elections, is perhaps, not possible in an environment, of indiscipline, lawlessness and criminality.

Interestingly, corruption is an official template in the Federal Republic, while public office has become a conclave of corrupt personalities.

It is very glaring that the establishment is responsible for the radicalization of those responsible for violent crimes in different parts of the country, creating in them sense of indestructibility and also equipping them with weapons of destruction.

The workable option left for those-in charge is to return to the drawing board and address the issues revolving around morality.

The consensus among Nigerians is that the arms build-up in different parts of the country has its background woven around the aspirations of actors in the socio-political scene in the land.

The arms build-up festers side by side with poverty, hunger, and brigandage, while the land has over time become fertile for trading in illegal arms with evil deeds as the major focus.

Indeed, state actors are familiar with the negative effects of injustice, inequality, nepotism, and favoritism, but are, sadly, handicapped by self-centered interests and incurable greed.

Interestingly, the competition for power and privilege has resulted in the loss of precious lives and the wanton destruction of the properties of innocent and harmless citizens. The debate among Nigerians now is on what constitutes the major functions of state actors.

The illegal influx of arms and ammunition has continued unabated through constitutional and unconstitutional channels with the active connivance of those who ought to be well-informed on security matters.

As violent crimes soar nationwide through the use of sophisticated weapons, Those-in-Charge have adopted the position of spectators to the amazement and chagrin of Nigerians.

In 1975, the reign of terror was directed and supervised by the Ministry of Interior, where a comprehensive list of action was domiciled in Montevideo.

Lawlessness and impunity are now the order of the day everywhere in Nigeria as anarchy gradually creeps into prominence. Threats, blackmail, harassment, intimidation and attacks are all tools used to achieve sinister motives in this climate, while fraudsters now play a prominent role in government and governance. Community leaders, Homeowners and Tenants Associations and criminally minded residents also play prominent roles in crime. For instance, a vulcanizer and a woman in her mid-thirties, who sell second-hand clothing located at a make-shift shed beside the gate of the Nigeria Baptist Convention quarters along the Scout Camp road, opposite the neighborhood market in Ibadan, Oyo state, Nigeria, are among several traders who perpetrate acts of criminality on a daily basis with impunity, with the knowledge of law enforcement agents. 

Indeed, a sizable number of shop owners in residential areas such as Molusi, Olorunsogo, Molete, Felele and several other communities across the country are now involved in grievous crimes in these communities, with the full support of government appointees, elected officials, public and civil servants. 

The motive which goes beyond the surface appearance is woven around property matters.

Already, the future of most children and young people is now a subject of debate, as crime and criminality systematically overwhelm their consciousness and existence.

Teachers and schools have since abandoned their responsibilities of imparting knowledge for obvious reasons, as the country moves farther and farther from good governance.

 Indeed, those who are supposed to protect lives and property are now facilitating all forms of crime, while those in leadership positions look on with delight.
